Scholes: Arteta Must Take Responsibility for VAR Criticism
Manchester United legend and TNT Sports expert Paul Scholes has expressed his disappointment with Mikel Arteta and Arsenal’s reaction following their 1-0 defeat to Newcastle in the Premier League on Saturday. Arteta described the VAR decision to allow Anthony Gordon’s winning goal as a “disgrace” and claimed to feel “sick” and “embarrassed”. The goal was checked for a foul, offside, and whether the ball had gone out of play before the assist, but all three were cleared and the goal stood. This defeat marked Arsenal’s first in the top-flight this season.
In a statement, Arsenal supported Arteta’s comments and criticized the refereeing as “unacceptable”. They called for the PGMOL to address the standard of officiating. Scholes, who heard Arteta’s comments but did not read the statement, believes that the Arsenal manager may have overreacted. He expressed his disappointment, stating that Arsenal is known for its class and this incident has left a sour taste. Scholes believes that Arteta should take responsibility for the team’s reaction.
Before the goal controversy, the game at St James’ Park had several contentious moments. Arsenal’s Kai Havertz made a heavy challenge on Sean Longstaff, while Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes appeared to catch Jorginho with his elbow. Both players escaped a red card.
Scholes believes that Arsenal should focus on improving their own form rather than blaming the officials. He pointed out that the team is making mistakes and the goalkeeping situation has raised questions. Despite Aaron Ramsdale performing well, Scholes questioned the decision to bring in David Raya, who has been making mistakes every week. Additionally, scoring goals has been a problem for Arsenal, especially away from home.
Arsenal will have the opportunity to bounce back when they face Sevilla in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday.
