Ruben Amorim has expressed his concerns regarding the mental state of his Manchester United players as they prepare for a crucial encounter against Liverpool this Sunday. The Red Devils currently find themselves languishing in 14th place in the Premier League, a mere seven points above the relegation zone, following a dismal run of three consecutive defeats.

Since taking over from Erik ten Hag in November, Amorim has struggled to turn the tide, with his side managing just two league victories under his stewardship. The pressure of playing for such a storied club appears to be weighing heavily on the players, as Amorim noted their anxious and fearful demeanor on the pitch.

“They are anxious, sometimes afraid on the pitch,” he told the BBC. “We have to cope with that. We need the leaders to step up to help the other guys, and I’m the most responsible person here to improve the performances.”

The manager’s comments come in the wake of a disappointing spell, which has seen United fail to secure a win since their impressive 2-1 triumph over Manchester City on December 15. Since then, they have suffered defeats to Bournemouth, Wolves, and Newcastle in the league, alongside a heart-wrenching 4-3 loss to Tottenham in the Carabao Cup.

Amorim candidly admitted that the pressure of the job is taking its toll on him as well. “You can see in my face, you can compare it to the way when I arrived and now,” he reflected. “Of course, there is a lot of pressure. For me, it’s the pride and also the performance. It’s harder when we don’t perform well.”

Looking ahead, Amorim is already targeting the January transfer window in a bid to bolster his squad. While he remained tight-lipped about specific targets, he did indicate that the club would be looking to make some moves.

“When the window is open, we can try to do something, and we will try to do something,” he stated. “But I think, in the next weeks, we are going to have more time to train, and we can improve. That’s the only way.”

With a congested fixture list having hindered their training opportunities, Amorim is hopeful that the upcoming period will allow for much-needed development. “You can see that the context is worse in this moment, as we had a lot of losses, so we have to manage everything. I will keep that to myself regarding who I want to sign, but we’ll try to do something.”

As United gear up for the daunting task at Anfield, the pressure is mounting on Amorim and his players to deliver a performance that can reignite their season.
