Rodri and Julian Alvarez find the back of the net in an effortless triumph in the Premier League.
Manchester City’s Spanish midfielder, Rodri, celebrated with his teammates after scoring the opening goal in their match against Sheffield United. The English champions finished a historic year by defeating the bottom side 2-0, moving within two points of the top spot in the table.
In the match at the Etihad Stadium, Pep Guardiola’s dominant passing side took the lead when Rodri prodded the ball into the net from the edge of the visiting area, assisted by Phil Foden’s lovely pass. Foden was again involved in the second goal, as he crossed for Julian Alvarez to score on his 50th Premier League appearance.
The victory for Manchester City ended a three-match winless run at home in the league, following draws with Liverpool, Tottenham, and Crystal Palace. They also recently won the FIFA World Club Cup final in Saudi Arabia, defeating Fluminense 4-0. The team welcomed back Belgian playmaker Kevin De Bruyne to their squad, although he remained an unused substitute.
Before the match, Manchester City paraded their collection of trophies, including the Premier League, FA Cup, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and Club World Cup. With this win, they are now breathing down the neck of leaders Liverpool at the halfway stage of the campaign.
Looking ahead, Manchester City will begin their defense of the FA Cup against Championship side Huddersfield at home in the third round. Their next Premier League outing will be against Newcastle on January 13.
On the other hand, Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United side remain at the bottom of the table with nine points from 20 matches. They will face League Two Gillingham in the FA Cup before hosting West Ham on January 21.
