Roberto De Zerbi is perplexed by the decision to include Kaoru Mitoma in the Japanese squad for the Asian Cup.
In a surprising turn of events, Brighton & Hove Albion winger Kaoru Mitoma has been included in Japan’s Asian Cup squad despite suffering from an ankle injury. Mitoma was seen leaving Selhurst Park on crutches after Brighton’s draw with Crystal Palace and was expected to be out for up to six weeks, casting doubt on his participation in the tournament.
However, Japan manager Hajime Moriyasu has decided to name the 26-year-old in his squad. Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi expressed his surprise at Mitoma’s inclusion, stating that his medical staff had informed him that the player would need several weeks to recover. De Zerbi admitted that it was difficult for him to believe that Mitoma would be able to play in the Asian Cup. Nevertheless, he expressed his support for the player and his pride in seeing his players represent their national teams.
Japan’s first match in the tournament is against Vietnam on January 14, and Moriyasu hopes that Mitoma will be fit enough to participate in some capacity. However, he acknowledged that the Vietnam match might come too soon for the winger. Moriyasu stated that Mitoma is recovering well and he expects him to be available early in the tournament.
In addition to Mitoma, Brighton will also be without Simon Adingra, who has been selected for Ivory Coast’s African Cup of Nations squad despite suffering from a hamstring injury. The Seagulls have been plagued by injuries throughout the season, with several key players currently sidelined, including Solly March, Joel Veltman, Tariq Lamptey, Ansu Fati, and Igor Julio.
Brighton will be looking to continue their positive momentum when they face West Ham in their upcoming Premier League match on Tuesday. The team is coming off an impressive 4-2 victory over Tottenham on December 28. However, they will be without captain Lewis Dunk, who will be serving a suspension after receiving his fifth booking of the season in the win over Spurs.
