Rio Ferdinand believes that Cole Palmer has the potential to be a valuable asset for England in Euro 2024, describing him as a fantastic talent.
In a thrilling Premier League match between Chelsea FC and Burnley FC at Stamford Bridge on March 30, 2024, all eyes were on Chelsea’s Cole Palmer. The young forward has been making waves in the football world and has caught the attention of former England international Rio Ferdinand.
Ferdinand, now a sports pundit, described Palmer as a “wonderful talent” and believes he could be a dark horse for England at Euro 2024. Palmer made the switch from Manchester City to Chelsea in the summer and has quickly established himself as a key player in Mauricio Pochettino’s attack.
Despite Chelsea’s disappointing season, Palmer has been a shining light with 22 goal involvements in the Premier League, including 14 goals and eight assists. Ferdinand was particularly impressed with Palmer’s approach to the game and his “superb skill”.
Speaking on TNT Sports ahead of Chelsea’s clash with Manchester United, Ferdinand said, “He is a wonderful talent. He has been the centre of attention in a couple of WhatsApp groups I’m involved in. One of my friends likened him to a Chris Waddle-type player. He has superb skill, his balance is mesmeric, it’s phenomenal.”
Ferdinand also commended Palmer for his decision to leave City and take a risk by joining Chelsea. “It is a big jump to come from City to come here, in terms of his confidence and the belief this kid has in himself,” Ferdinand added. “He could have been safe and stayed at City and play some games and win trophies. He has come here, a bigger risk not knowing what to expect. He has 21 goal involvements. An absolutely wonderful talent.”
The former England defender praised Palmer’s mindset and mentality, stating that he could walk into any environment and have the same attitude. At just 21 years old, Palmer has become the main focus of Chelsea’s team, which Ferdinand finds “wonderful to see”.
Looking ahead to the European Championship, England manager Gareth Southgate has a wealth of attacking talents to choose from. Ferdinand believes Palmer could be a valuable asset for the national team, as he is relatively unknown on the European and international stage. “He is somebody that not everybody will know too much about,” Ferdinand said. “He could be another weapon, internationally.”
With Ferdinand’s endorsement and his impressive performances for Chelsea, all eyes will be on Cole Palmer as he continues to make a name for himself in the football world.
