Rio Ferdinand believes that Arsenal are in contention for the Premier League title following their dominant victory over Newcastle.
Arsenal’s German midfielder Kai Havertz celebrated with his teammates after scoring their second goal in a dominant 4-1 victory over Newcastle United at the Emirates Stadium. This impressive performance has caught the attention of former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, who believes that Arsenal are now serious contenders for the Premier League title.
Ferdinand praised Arsenal’s response to their midweek defeat to Porto in the UEFA Champions League, stating that their intensity and intent from the first whistle was evident. He commended their character, personality, and belief, suggesting that they are “sniffing something” and have a genuine chance of winning the league this season.
The Gunners got off to a flying start and took the lead in the 18th minute when Gabriel Magalhaes’ header was inadvertently knocked into his own net by Sven Botman. Havertz continued his impressive goal-scoring form by adding a second before half-time, thanks to a brilliant assist from Gabriel Martinelli. Bukayo Saka made it three in the second half with a superb strike, while Jakub Kiwior sealed the victory with Arsenal’s fourth goal. The only blemish on the night was a late consolation goal for Newcastle, scored by former Arsenal player Joe Willock.
Ferdinand emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum and keeping key players fit. He praised Arsenal’s high level of performance in the Premier League, highlighting their intensity, aggression, and athleticism. He also noted their ability to play with a high tempo both on and off the ball, as well as their forward-thinking approach in transition.
Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown echoed Ferdinand’s sentiments and singled out Jorginho as the player of the match. Keown credited the Italian midfielder for his role in changing the team’s structure and building attacks from the base of midfield. He also highlighted the freedom given to the wide players, which benefited Havertz in particular.
Overall, both Ferdinand and Keown believe that Arsenal are genuine contenders for the Premier League title this season. With their impressive form and strong performances, the Gunners are determined to avoid a repeat of last season’s disappointment and challenge Liverpool and Manchester City for the top spot.
