Reports indicate that Enzo Fernandez has come back to Chelsea and has expressed regret to his fellow team members, as the club wraps up its inquiry following a controversy involving racism.
Chelsea Football Club has reportedly concluded its investigation into the actions of Enzo Fernandez, as the Argentine midfielder has joined his teammates on the club’s tour of the United States.
The 23-year-old has issued apologies to several French players in the squad following a video that was posted on his social media platforms after Argentina’s Copa America victory. In the video, Fernandez and several Argentina players were seen singing a song about France’s Black players, which was described by teammate Wesley Fofana as “uninhibited racism.” The French Football Federation also condemned the footage, deeming it to contain a “racist and discriminatory” chant.
However, Chelsea has decided that no further action is necessary after Fernandez offered to donate money to an anti-racism and anti-discrimination charity. The club has pledged to match the donations to the same charity.
While Chelsea has closed its investigation, FIFA is still conducting its own inquiry, and the involvement of the Football Association (FA) could potentially lead to a ban for Fernandez.
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has already attempted to defuse the situation and expressed confidence that there will be no issues within the squad upon Fernandez’s return. Maresca stated, “I don’t think when Enzo is back that we will have any situations. Enzo clarified the situation, the club did the same, so there is nothing to add. They are not bad persons or human beings. It can happen, but I don’t think there are any problems at all. I spoke with Enzo and all of them.”
Captain Reece James echoed Maresca’s sentiments and emphasized the importance of moving forward from the incident before Fernandez rejoins the team. James said, “It’s a difficult situation, and Enzo has acknowledged he was wrong and quickly apologized to the club, team, and people offended. Enzo hasn’t arrived yet. I will have to make that judgment (on whether to get involved) when he does. I hope everyone can move forward with the situation. I’ve spoken to Enzo and everyone involved, but the conversations have to stay in-house.”
