Renato Veiga is extremely excited to join Chelsea from FC Basel, as the Blues announce their fifth summer acquisition.
Chelsea Football Club have made an exciting new signing, as they have officially announced the arrival of Renato Veiga from FC Basel. The defensive midfielder, who is just 20 years old, has joined the club for a reported fee of £12 million. Veiga has signed a seven-year contract with the option for an additional year.
This marks Chelsea’s fifth signing of the summer, with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Tosin Adarabioyo, Omari Kellyman, and Marc Guiu already joining the ranks. Veiga will now join the first-team squad for pre-season training under the guidance of new manager Enzo Maresca.
Expressing his excitement about the move, Veiga stated, “I’m absolutely buzzing to be here. This is one of the biggest clubs in England – the biggest for me – and I’m just really excited to get started.”
Veiga’s football journey has seen him spend a significant portion of his youth career at Sporting Lisbon, where he also played for the club’s B team from 2021 to 2023. He then had a loan spell at FC Augsburg before eventually signing for Basel, where he played last season. Additionally, Veiga has represented Portugal at various youth levels and currently plays for their Under-21 side.
When asked to describe his playing style, Veiga said, “I’m a smart, aggressive player. I’m comfortable on the ball and I would describe myself as a complete player due to my versatility. I’m comfortable in many positions on the pitch.”
He further added, “I like to defend a lot and with my height and physical strength, I enjoy it. I like to control the game with or without the ball.”
Veiga comes from a footballing family, as his father, Nelson Veiga, played professionally across Europe and represented the Cape Verde national team. This has instilled a sense of maturity in the young midfielder, who stated, “Following my dad throughout his career, I would say that I’m very mature for my age.”
Chelsea fans can expect to see Veiga in action during the club’s pre-season tour in the United States later this month. The team will face Wrexham, Celtic, Club America, Manchester City, and Real Madrid before returning to London for a match against Inter Milan at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues will then kick off their Premier League campaign with a highly anticipated clash against Manchester City on Sunday, August 18.
