“Reinstating the quadruple mindset” to “intimidate” Chelsea following the Women’s Champions League victory against Man City.

Karen Carney believes Chelsea are firmly eyeing the quadruple after they convincingly dispatched Manchester City 3-0 at Stamford Bridge on Thursday night.

Goals from Sandy Baltimore, Nathalie Bjorn, and Mayra Ramirez turned around a two-goal deficit from the first leg, securing Sonia Bompastor’s side a place in the UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-finals.

With the League Cup champions currently leading the Women’s Super League and also reaching the semi-finals of the FA Cup, Carney feels Chelsea are one step closer to achieving a historic quadruple.

“The first 45 minutes, they absolutely blew Manchester City away and there was literally no response there,” Carney remarked on TNT Sports. “Look at their squad; there are players not even available, it’s frightening. This team, the quadruple mentality is back on.”

“They’re not stopping; they’re a train, and when they’re on it, you literally can’t stop them,” she added.

Carney also commented on Bompastor’s situation, saying, “She’s probably feeling that pressure because she’s inherited a brilliant squad from Emma Hayes, and then added players like Lucy Bronze, Keira Walsh, the list goes on.”

“The staff have said, ‘go on, we’ve brought you in, you know how to do it, go and get it done for us’. It’s easier said than done just bringing players in; you still have to pick the right team, motivate them, and get the job done. But like I said, that team will be in there thinking, ‘we want that quadruple and we’re not going to stop’.”

Carney continued, “Lucy Bronze’s mind will be ticking, ‘quadruple, quadruple, quadruple’. It will, and you can see it now; they’re a train and it’s very hard to stop them.”

Fellow expert Eni Aluko echoed Carney’s sentiments, stating that she had just witnessed “the Chelsea we know” and “the Chelsea who just get it done.”

“It wasn’t necessarily about tactics today; I thought it was about energy, the hunger, the desire,” she said on TNT Sports. “The front three for Chelsea were unbelievable. They set the tone from minute one. This is the Chelsea way. They just have a relentless desire to win, and it comes through in big matches.”

Looking ahead, Chelsea will face Barcelona in the last four, with the winner set to meet either fellow WSL outfit Arsenal or Bompastor’s former side and eight-time champions Lyon.
