Premier League: Yoane Wissa scores twice as Brentford dominate Luton, Burnley score four goals against Sheffield United.
In a thrilling Premier League clash at Kenilworth Road, Brentford delivered a resounding 5-1 victory over Luton Town, taking a significant step towards securing their safety in the top flight. Despite missing their influential captain Ivan Toney, Thomas Frank’s side showcased their best performance of the season, moving 10 points clear of the relegation zone.
The scoring was opened by Yoane Wissa in the 24th minute, as he expertly fired into the top corner after being set up by Bryan Mbeumo. Wissa, deputizing for Toney in the central role, doubled his tally and the Bees’ lead just before half-time, capitalizing on defensive errors from Luton and finding the back of the net with a poked effort.
Brentford continued their dominance in the second half, with Ethan Pinnock rising highest to head home after more calamitous defending from the hosts. Just two minutes later, Keane Lewis-Potter got in on the act, nodding in Mbeumo’s cross to the far post. Kevin Schade, recently back from injury, added a fifth goal in the dying minutes, courtesy of a dummy from Neal Maupay.
Although Luke Berry managed to score a consolation goal for Luton in injury time, it was too little too late. Brentford secured a crucial three points that virtually guarantees their place in the Premier League for another season.
Meanwhile, Burnley reignited their battle for survival with an impressive 4-1 victory over Sheffield United. Vincent Kompany’s side produced a morale-boosting performance, scoring two quick goals in the 38th and 40th minutes. Jacob Bruun Larsen capitalized on a deflected strike, while Lorenz Assignon doubled the lead with a composed finish.
Gustavo Hamer’s curler on 52 minutes gave Sheffield United a glimmer of hope, but Lyle Foster extinguished any chances of a comeback by making it three for Burnley just six minutes later. Johann Gudmundsson, who came off the bench, sealed the result with a stunning strike into the bottom corner.
With four games remaining, Kompany’s Clarets find themselves three points away from safety. However, Nottingham Forest, currently in 17th place, have a game in hand over Burnley, adding further pressure to their fight for survival.
