Paris Saint-Germain expressed disappointment at not being able to score additional goals, even after their dominant victory over Atletico Madrid in the 2025 Club World Cup held in Pasadena.

Paris Saint-Germain made a resounding statement in their opening FIFA Club World Cup match on Sunday, securing a dominant 4-0 victory over Atletico Madrid. However, midfielder Vitinha expressed his disappointment, stating he felt “sad” that his team did not score more goals.

The French giants arrived in the United States riding high on the wave of their historic UEFA Champions League triumph and continued their impressive form by dismantling Diego Simeone’s side in front of a raucous crowd of over 80,000 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

PSG took control of the match early, with first-half goals from Fabian Ruiz and Vitinha giving them a commanding lead at the break. Late in the game, substitutes Senny Mayulu and Lee Kang-in added further gloss to the scoreline, sealing a comprehensive victory.

Atletico Madrid’s woes were compounded when they were reduced to ten men in the dying moments, as Clement Lenglet received a second yellow card for dissent.

Despite the scoreline, PSG had numerous chances to extend their lead in the sweltering midday heat, with temperatures soaring to 31°C. Goncalo Ramos, in particular, missed several opportunities to add to the tally, failing to find the ruthless edge needed in front of goal.

“A very good performance, actually, but as always I will talk about the team first,” Vitinha told DAZN. “We had a very good game. It was difficult with the high temperature. We did it against a tough team in Atletico, but we did very well. We managed to control all the game. Sad we couldn’t score more.”

He added, “The toughest thing to do in football is maintain a high level. It was a very good performance for the team, and a very good start for the competition.”

Manager Luis Enrique also shared his thoughts, stating, “We are happy. Even with this high temperature, we are happy. You have to manage that. It is difficult to play in these conditions. I think every single player showed their best quality to the team. As a coach, I am happy. Really great to feel that love from the stadium. We are happy and want to continue with our ways.”

Looking ahead, PSG will face Botafogo in their second Group B match in Pasadena on Friday, June 20, while Atletico Madrid will take on Seattle Sounders in Seattle on Thursday, June 19.
