Nikita Parris nets two goals as Manchester United dominate Newcastle in the Women’s FA Cup, while Manchester City easily defeat Durham.
LEIGH, ENGLAND – JANUARY 14: Manchester United Women cruised into the fifth round of the Women’s FA Cup with a dominant 5-0 victory over Durham at Leigh Sports Village. The Red Devils put on a professional display against their third-tier opponents, seeking redemption after last season’s final defeat to Chelsea.
Ella Toone opened the scoring for United in the 28th minute, meeting Luis Garcia’s cross from the left-hand side and firing a trademark shot into the net. Toone then turned provider, delivering a cross for Nikita Parris to head home and double United’s lead.
Parris thought she had a second goal before half-time, but it was disallowed by the assistant referee’s flag. However, it didn’t take long for United to extend their lead in the second half. Garcia capitalized on a mistake from Durham goalkeeper Grace Donnelly, setting up Parris for an easy tap-in.
Rachel Williams joined the scoring spree with a brilliant first-time effort that hit the woodwork and then slotted home the rebound. Melvine Malard completed the rout for United, converting a corner with a header that bounced down onto the turf before finding the back of the net.
Despite the heavy defeat, this was a significant day for Newcastle, who are enjoying a successful season in the Women’s National League. Sitting at the top of the table after earning promotion last season, the Magpies have their sights set on regular encounters with top-tier teams like United in the near future.
In another match, Manchester City breezed past Durham with a comfortable 4-0 victory at Maiden Castle. Laura Coombs opened the scoring for City in the seventh minute with a powerful volley from Chloe Kelly’s cross. Jill Roord added two more goals for Gareth Taylor’s side, one with a ferocious strike from inside the box and the other with a delightful chip over goalkeeper Naoisha McAloon. Mary Fowler sealed the win for City with a close-range strike late in the game.
Both Manchester United and Manchester City showcased their dominance in the Women’s FA Cup fourth round, setting the stage for exciting clashes in the upcoming rounds.
