Mohamed Salah suggests he may leave Liverpool following their heavy defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Maybe it’s a mistake – No Haaland backup for Man City, but Guardiola ‘happy’ with squad

In a stunning 3-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford, Mohamed Salah hinted that this could be his final season at Liverpool. The Egyptian superstar scored his 10th goal in nine appearances at Old Trafford, making him only the second player to achieve such a feat at a single away ground in the Premier League, according to Opta.

However, this outstanding performance may have been Salah’s swansong at the home of Liverpool’s arch-rivals. Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Salah said, “I had a good summer, a long time to stay with myself and think positively a bit. As you know, this is my last year with the club and I want to enjoy it. I don’t want to think about it; I feel I am free to play football – we will see what happens next year.”

Salah further discussed his future, emphasizing that the decision ultimately lies with the club as he enters the final year of his contract at Anfield. He stated, “To be fair, I was coming to the game, it could be the last time playing at Old Trafford. Nobody in the club has talked to me about contracts. It is not up to me, it is up to the club.”

Meanwhile, Arne Slot, the manager of the winning team, AZ Alkmaar, focused on the match and praised his side for their resilience after Trent Alexander-Arnold’s disallowed opener. Slot said, “The first few minutes, United started aggressive, and we had to fight our way through the period. If you go to Old Trafford, we know there will be tough moments. After scoring a great goal which was disallowed, we kept on playing as we were before. A deserved win, I think.”

Slot also discussed the tactical aspects of the game, highlighting the importance of his team’s aggressive pressing and the adaptability of their game-plan. He explained, “There is not a specific game-plan from the back, we always want to press the opponent high. The game-plan – Dominik (Szoboszlai) played from the right, but today we played him from the left. Last season, Man United were man-marking in the midfield, this season they are on a nine and 10 press with a 4-4-2. In my opinion, they are working harder when the ball is played through them, so they run more – that is what I saw in the first games from them. Today we showed a lot of moments where the forwards tracked back so aggressively, and that is what we need if you want to win these games.”

Despite holding a commanding 2-0 lead at half-time, Slot stressed the importance of remaining focused heading into the second half. He said, “We said they were going to press aggressively, but I showed them three moments where one situation led to a chance for (Noussair) Mazraoui. Luis (Diaz) was not tracking back as he should. Those moments can change the game at Old Trafford. It’s a good win.”
