Mo Salah’s penalty saved a point for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool team following Mainoo’s stunning goal.
Mohamed Salah’s celebration echoed throughout Old Trafford as he scored a crucial goal for Liverpool in their Premier League clash against Manchester United. The match ended in a thrilling 2-2 draw, dealing a blow to Liverpool’s hopes of clinching the title.
Jurgen Klopp’s side desperately needed a win to reclaim the top spot from Arsenal, who had secured a victory against Brighton the previous day. However, despite dominating the game for long periods, Liverpool once again faltered against their bitter rivals from Manchester.
United had an early goal disallowed for offside, courtesy of Alejandro Garnacho. This setback allowed Liverpool to take control of the first half, with Dominik Szoboszlai and Salah both coming close to scoring. Eventually, Luis Diaz broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute, capitalizing on Darwin Nunez’s flick-on from a corner.
To Klopp’s frustration, Liverpool failed to capitalize on their dominance, wasting numerous opportunities to extend their lead. They had a staggering 15 shots compared to United’s zero, leaving the door open for a potential comeback, reminiscent of United’s FA Cup victory over Liverpool three weeks prior.
True to form, United made a comeback in the 50th minute when Bruno Fernandes executed a magnificent long-range lob, catching Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher off guard after a poor pass from Jarell Quansah.
United then took the lead in the 67th minute through Kobbie Mainoo’s exquisite curling shot. However, Liverpool managed to salvage a point when Salah calmly converted a penalty in the 84th minute.
The result leaves Arsenal at the top of the table, ahead of Liverpool on goal difference, with only seven matches remaining. Reigning champions Manchester City are one point behind in third place, while United remain in sixth, trailing fourth-place Aston Villa by 11 points, albeit with a game in hand.
Liverpool’s focus now shifts to the UEFA Europa League quarter-final first leg against Atalanta on Thursday, followed by a Premier League clash against Crystal Palace at home on Sunday. Meanwhile, United will face Bournemouth on Saturday in their next league fixture.
