Mauricio Pochettino expressed satisfaction with Chelsea’s performance, despite their recent sacking.
Mauricio Pochettino, the former Chelsea manager, has expressed his belief that he has left the club in a much better state than when he first took charge. The Argentine was relieved of his duties at Stamford Bridge at the end of the 2023/24 season, having spent just 12 months in charge.
Despite a rocky start, Pochettino managed to guide Chelsea to a sixth-place finish in the Premier League. However, this was not enough to secure his position, as Enzo Maresca was announced as his replacement earlier this week.
Taking to Instagram to address the fans, Pochettino said, “We understand the immense importance of this football club to all of you, which is why we have worked tirelessly to give you a Chelsea that you can be proud of. I am extremely pleased with the progress the team has made and the dedication shown by the players and staff in raising their standards. They deserve immense credit, and I hope you felt the same watching their performances on the pitch.”
Chelsea’s points tally in the 2023/24 season was 19 points higher than the previous campaign, resulting in a six-place improvement in the Premier League table. As a result, the club has secured a place in the UEFA Europa Conference League after missing out on European football last season.
In addition to their league success, Chelsea reached the final of the League Cup, narrowly losing to Liverpool, and made it to the semi-finals of the FA Cup, where they were defeated by Manchester City.
Despite a difficult start to the season, with only five victories in their first 16 league matches, Chelsea found their rhythm and ended the campaign with an impressive run of five consecutive league wins, securing European football for the following season.
Although Pochettino was unable to retain his position as manager, he believes that the club is on the right track for future success. He stated, “We have experienced both highs and lows, but we always believed in this team and their ability to reach a consistent level. The improvements we have witnessed this season will only make the players stronger in the future. It has been a pleasure working with them, and we value the strong bonds we have formed over the past year. I wish all of you the best for the upcoming season and beyond.”
