Marseille has fired Gennaro Gattuso due to a poor start in 2024, and Jean-Louis Gasset has been appointed as his replacement.
Marseille have made the decision to part ways with Gennaro Gattuso following their failure to secure a league victory in 2024. The south-coast club has appointed Jean-Louis Gasset as the interim manager in light of this development.
The decision comes after Marseille suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Ligue 1 surprise package Brest on Sunday. Gattuso, who is 46 years old, was brought in by Marseille in September as a replacement for Marcelinho, who stepped down from his position after just three months due to personal reasons.
Gasset, on the other hand, was recently dismissed by the Ivory Coast during their successful Africa Cup of Nations campaign. Despite leading Marseille to the play-off round of the Europa League, Gattuso’s tenure has been marred by the club’s recent struggles.
Their only victory in 2024 came in the Coupe de France, where they narrowly defeated fifth-tier side US Thionville Lusitanos 1-0. Their last triumph in Ligue 1 dates back to December 17 when they emerged victorious against Clermont Foot.
As a result of their poor form, Marseille has slipped to ninth place in the table. They currently trail Monaco, who occupy the final European spot in fifth, by eight points. Additionally, they are one point behind Nice, who currently hold the third Champions League spot.
Gasset’s appointment as interim manager marks the fifth change in leadership for Marseille in the past three years. Previous managers Jorge Sampaoli, Igor Tudor, Marcelinho, and now Gattuso have all struggled to maintain long-term positions on the French south coast.
