Marcel Sabitzer’s fantastic goal secures first place for Austria in an exciting five-goal match.
Austria’s midfielder #09 Marcel Sabitzer sent the crowd into a frenzy as he celebrated scoring his team’s third goal in a thrilling UEFA Euro 2024 Group D football match against the Netherlands. The match took place at the iconic Olympiastadion in Berlin on June 25, 2024.
In a game filled with twists and turns, the Netherlands managed to equalize twice against Austria. However, it was Sabitzer’s 80th-minute winner that ultimately secured Ralf Rangnick’s side the top spot in Group D, sealing a dramatic 3-2 victory.
Austria entered the match in third place, but their final position in the group is a well-deserved reward for the intensity they displayed right from the start. They were duly compensated for their efforts with an unusual own goal by Donyell Malen, which gave them the lead.
However, Ronald Koeman’s tactical change of moving full back Lutsharel Geertruida into midfield at halftime completely altered the game. Cody Gakpo’s goal leveled the score, and the Netherlands had opportunities to take the lead.
Yet, it was the resilience and character of the Austrian side that shone through. They weathered the storm and regained the lead in the 60th minute through Romano Schmid. Even after Memphis Depay’s equalizer, which was initially disallowed, many teams would have lost heart.
However, Austria’s captain, Sabitzer, stepped up once again to secure the crucial winning goal. With this victory, Austria now sits at the top of Group D with six points. France follows closely behind with five points, while the Netherlands is guaranteed a third-place finish with four points.
