Manchester United’s football director, John Murtough, will be resigning after serving for 11 years as part of the ongoing restructuring of the club.
Manchester United’s football hierarchy is undergoing yet another shake-up, as Football Director John Murtough has announced his departure from the club after 11 years of service.
Murtough, who was appointed as the Red Devils’ first football director in 2021, has held numerous positions at Old Trafford since joining from Everton in 2013. Not only has Murtough been involved with the United academy system and recruitment department, but he also has strong connections to the club’s women’s team.
His departure marks a significant change for the club, as they continue to navigate a period of transition. Chairman Sir Jim Ratcliffe expressed his gratitude towards Murtough, stating, “We want to thank John for his loyal service over many years, and for his support and integrity during this period of transition. He leaves with our best wishes for the future.”
Following this latest development, Murtough felt that it was the appropriate time to seek new opportunities elsewhere. Co-chair Joel Glazer commented, “After 11 years of tireless work for the club, John has mutually agreed with us that now is the right time to step aside and allow the new football leadership structure to be put in place. He will always be welcome back at Manchester United as a friend of the club.”
This news comes amidst Manchester United’s pre-season preparations, as they faced Wrexham in a friendly match at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, California on July 25, 2023. With the club undergoing significant changes off the pitch, fans will be eager to see how these developments will impact their on-field performance in the upcoming season.
