Manchester City has taken the lead in the WSL standings after defeating Manchester United, and Khadija Shaw has now become the top scorer for the club.

Khadija Shaw, the star striker for Manchester City Women, made history during their clash against Manchester United by becoming the all-time leading goalscorer for the club. Shaw’s goal in City’s 3-1 victory propelled her to the top of the record books.

The match took place at the iconic Etihad Stadium in Manchester, England, and drew an impressive crowd of 40,086 passionate fans. City’s win not only secured them the bragging rights in the Manchester derby but also propelled them to the summit of the Women’s Super League table.

Shaw’s record-breaking goal came early in the second half, just moments after the restart. She showcased her skill and composure as she received a pass from Jess Park on the edge of the penalty box. Shaw took a few touches before calmly slotting the ball past United goalkeeper Mary Earps.

This goal marked Shaw’s 68th for Manchester City, an incredible achievement considering she has achieved this feat in just 82 appearances. In the current Women’s Super League season, Shaw has already netted 17 goals, further solidifying her status as one of the league’s top scorers.

City’s victory was also aided by the impressive performance of Jess Park, who scored twice in the first half. Although Shaw’s involvement in the build-up to the opener may have been questionable due to a potential offside, her second goal was a well-taken effort that left no room for doubt.

Despite a consolation own goal from City defender Kerstin Casparij in the 73rd minute, United failed to mount a comeback and were unable to salvage a result from the match.

Shaw’s exceptional goalscoring form has been instrumental in City’s success this season. With 43 points, they currently sit at the top of the Women’s Super League table. However, their position is under threat from Chelsea, who are just three points behind with a game in hand against West Ham on Sunday. The two teams are currently level on goal difference, making the title race even more thrilling.

On the other hand, Manchester United find themselves in fourth place with 28 points, six points adrift of third-place Arsenal. Their hopes of qualifying for the UEFA Women’s Champions League next season have significantly diminished compared to their second-place finish in the previous WSL campaign.

As the season progresses, it remains to be seen if Shaw’s goalscoring prowess can continue to propel Manchester City towards glory or if their rivals can mount a comeback and snatch the title away.
