Maidstone United, competing in the National League South, emerged victorious with a 2-1 win over Ipswich, who play in the Championship division, securing their place in the fifth round of the FA Cup.
Maidstone United of the National League South created a major upset in the FA Cup by defeating Championship team Ipswich 2-1 to reach the fifth round. Despite being 98 places and four divisions below Ipswich, Maidstone took advantage of their opponents’ complacency, as Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna made 10 changes to the team.
Maidstone’s opening goal showcased the quality of their play, as Lamar Reynolds finished off a swift counter-attack from an Ipswich corner with a composed chip over goalkeeper Christian Walton. Ipswich’s Jeremy Sarmiento equalized with a low shot into the bottom corner in the 56th minute, but Maidstone secured their fairytale ending when Reynolds set up Sam Corne to score the winning goal 24 minutes from time. Corne had also scored the winner in the third round against Stevenage.
Maidstone boss and former Wolves defender George Elokobi praised his team’s effort, stating that they had given their all and achieved something that hadn’t been done in over 100 years. He emphasized the significance of their achievement and the magic of the FA Cup. Elokobi expressed his pride in his players and the recognition they received from Ipswich, a team with a rich history in English football.
Looking ahead, Maidstone could potentially face Manchester City in the next round, as the holders advanced with a 1-0 victory over Tottenham. Meanwhile, Liverpool, who recently announced that Jurgen Klopp will be leaving the club at the end of the season, will face Norwich at Anfield. Manchester United will travel to play League Two team Newport County.
