Liverpool’s Egyptian sensation, Mohamed Salah, was in fine form as he celebrated his second goal during a commanding 2-0 victory against Aston Villa at Anfield on November 9, 2024. The win propelled the Reds five points clear of reigning champions Manchester City at the summit of the Premier League.

With City suffering a surprising 2-1 defeat to Brighton earlier in the day, the pressure was firmly on Liverpool to deliver. Manager Arne Slot’s side rose to the occasion, securing their sixth home win over Villa in their last seven league encounters in front of a vibrant and expectant crowd.

The breakthrough came courtesy of Darwin Nunez, who opened the scoring in the 20th minute. After a rapid counter-attack, Nunez rounded Villa’s goalkeeper, Emiliano Martínez, to slot the ball home. This came after Salah was felled by Leon Bailey, but referee David Coote allowed play to continue, much to the delight of the home fans.

Despite Villa’s spirited efforts and several opportunities to equalise, they were unable to find the back of the net. Liverpool’s second goal arrived in the 84th minute, as Salah capped off another swift break, lifting the ball over Martínez to seal the three points for the hosts.

Under Slot’s management, Liverpool has now won 15 of their last 17 matches, including nine of their first 11 league games. The team heads into the international break in excellent form, with their next fixture against Southampton scheduled for November 24.

On the other hand, Unai Emery’s Aston Villa side is struggling, having lost their last four matches. They currently sit eighth in the league and will be looking to bounce back when they host Crystal Palace in a fortnight.

**Match Highlights:**

**20′ GOAL! (NUNEZ)**
Liverpool 1-0 Aston Villa
A stunning goal from Nunez! Liverpool transition from defence to attack in a flash. Salah picks up a pass from Virgil van Dijk and, despite being fouled by Bailey, Nunez capitalises on the loose ball, rounding Martínez and smashing it home.

**31′ GOLDEN CHANCE FOR SECOND LIVERPOOL GOAL!**
Villa’s defence is all over the place as Liverpool break from a corner. Salah turns provider for Nunez, but the striker blazes over the bar with only Martínez to beat. A huge opportunity missed.

**37′ VILLA ALMOST GRAB A LEVELLER!**
Caoimhín Kelleher makes two excellent saves to deny headers from Amadou Onana and Diego Carlos. Lucas Digne then fails to convert a volley after Kelleher misjudged a cross. Three quick chances for Villa, but none taken.

**47′ VILLA WITH ANOTHER CHANCE TO LEVEL**
Villa start the second half brightly, going direct. Morgan Rogers finds himself in a good position but sends his shot well wide when it looked easier to score. Emery is visibly frustrated on the bench.

**84′ GOAL! (SALAH)**
Liverpool 2-0 Aston Villa
Another brilliant break from Liverpool! After Pau Torres goes down appealing for a penalty at the other end, Salah picks up the loose ball and lifts it over Martínez. It’s 2-0 to Liverpool, and surely game over.
