Lee Carsley will take charge of England for the UEFA Nations League campaign following Gareth Southgate’s departure.
Carsley to Step in for England
England are in search of an interim manager for their upcoming UEFA Nations League games, set to begin in September. According to The Sun, Lee Carsley, the current manager of the England under-21 team, is the frontrunner for the temporary position.
The paper states that Carsley is expected to lead the Three Lions into their Nations League campaign, with the Football Association (FA) believing he is the best choice for the next match against the Republic of Ireland. This move would mirror Gareth Southgate’s appointment in 2016, when he was promoted from the under-21s boss to England manager on an interim basis.
Newcastle to Resist England’s Interest in Howe
Eddie Howe has been linked to the England managerial job following Gareth Southgate’s departure, making him one of the favourites among bookmakers. However, The Telegraph reports that Newcastle United are determined to keep hold of Howe after two successful seasons.
The paper reveals that Newcastle will fight any attempt by England to lure Howe as Southgate’s successor, as he signed a secret contract extension last summer without a set release clause. Newcastle’s chief executive, Darren Eales, expressed confidence that Howe is not going anywhere and revealed that there is no compensation fee in his contract that would allow the FA to trigger a release clause. This strengthens Newcastle’s position, unless Howe changes his mind and requests to leave if the FA approaches him.
Man Utd Awaiting Yoro’s Decision
Manchester United have made a bid for 18-year-old Lille defender Leny Yoro and are now waiting for his decision. Yoro, however, has expressed a preference for signing with Real Madrid, although the Spanish club has yet to make an offer for the young defender.
The Mirror explains that Yoro is holding out for a dream transfer to Real Madrid, despite United’s official bid. The centre-back made his breakthrough into Lille’s first team during the 2022/23 season and impressed with 44 appearances last term, attracting interest from top European clubs. While Real Madrid is keen on Yoro, United is the only club to have made an official bid to sign him this summer.
West Ham Eager to Secure Sorloth
West Ham United are hoping to secure the signing of Alexander Sorloth from Villarreal, but the two clubs have yet to agree on a fee for the striker. West Ham has discussed a figure of £25 million for Sorloth, but Villarreal is holding out for £7 million more.
The Mail reports that West Ham has made further enquiries for the 28-year-old forward, who had an impressive season with Villarreal, scoring 26 goals in 41 games. However, Villarreal is demanding £32 million, which is the value of Sorloth’s buy-out clause in his current contract. In addition to West Ham’s interest, the Norway international is also attracting attention from Roma.
