Jurgen Klopp holds his team responsible for Liverpool’s draw against Manchester United.
MANCHESTER, ENGLAND – APRIL 7: Jurgen Klopp, the head coach/manager of Liverpool, expressed his disappointment after his team let slip their advantage in the Premier League title race, settling for a 2-2 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford on April 7, 2024.
Liverpool took the lead at Old Trafford with an acrobatic goal from Luis Diaz in the 23rd minute. However, Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo responded with superb strikes to put United in the driving seat. This defeat would have left Liverpool one point behind Arsenal at the top of the table, instead of the two-point lead they would have had if they had won.
With just seven minutes remaining, Aaron Wan-Bissaka fouled Harvey Elliott in the penalty area, leading to Mo Salah’s successful spot-kick and salvaging a draw for Klopp’s side. The German manager believes that his team should have come away with a victory from the game.
Liverpool dominated the match, registering 28 shots compared to United’s nine and enjoying 63% of the possession. This performance was reminiscent of their previous encounter, a 4-3 defeat in the FA Cup quarter-finals three weeks ago.
During the post-match press conference, Klopp expressed his frustrations, stating, “We played two games at Old Trafford and got one point and got knocked out of the FA Cup. But in all my time, I don’t think we have ever dominated the way we did today. Arsenal is a good football team, and if United play like today, Arsenal will win that game, I’m 100% sure. I’m really sorry to say that, but this is a matter of fact. We should’ve won both games and didn’t. That’s our fault.”
Liverpool’s next challenge is a quarter-final clash against Atalanta in the UEFA Europa League, which will be broadcast live on TNT Sports and discovery+ on Thursday. Their next league fixture will be a home match against Oliver Glasner’s Crystal Palace.
