Jude Bellingham is allowed to play in the Euro 2024 quarter-final against Switzerland, as he has been given a suspended one-match ban.
Jude Bellingham has responded to the criticism he faced for his gesture during England’s 2-1 victory over Slovakia. The young midfielder has been fined £25,000 (€30,000) and given a suspended one-match ban, but he will still be available for England’s quarter-final clash against Switzerland.
Bellingham’s gesture, where he grabbed his crotch after scoring the equaliser in stoppage time, was explained by the Real Madrid player as “an inside joke” with his friends. He took to social media to clarify that it was directed towards his close friends who were in attendance and expressed his respect for Slovakia’s performance.
UEFA accused Bellingham of violating “the basic rules of decent conduct” and announced a disciplinary investigation. However, with the verdict now reached, it appears that the matter is closed and Bellingham can focus on the upcoming match in Dusseldorf.
In contrast, Turkey’s Merih Demiral was not as fortunate. The Al Ahli defender has received an immediate two-match ban for his actions, which were considered to have violated the basic rules of decent conduct and brought the sport of football into disrepute. As a result, Demiral will miss Turkey’s quarter-final against the Netherlands and potentially a semi-final if they advance.
