Jordan Henderson, the midfield player from England, finalizes his transfer to Ajax.
Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has made a sensational return to European football by signing for Ajax. The 33-year old’s move comes just six months after his controversial transfer to Al Ettifaq, where he reunited with former Reds teammate Steven Gerrard in the Saudi Pro League. Following in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema, Henderson ventured to the Middle East, but his time there was short-lived, lasting only 19 games as he reportedly struggled to settle.
With Euro 2024 on the horizon, Henderson has remained a part of Gareth Southgate’s England squad, despite facing boos from some fans during the match against Australia at Wembley in late 2023. Eager to secure his place on the plane to Germany, Henderson had been considering his options for leaving Ettifaq. The club confirmed the termination of his contract in a statement, expressing gratitude for his contributions.
Henderson could make his debut for Ajax this Sunday as they host RKC Waalwijk in the Eredivisie. Ajax coach John van ‘t Schip expressed his delight at securing the services of the experienced midfielder with leadership qualities. Van ‘t Schip also highlighted the need for immediate availability due to injuries within the squad. Henderson’s arrival is seen as a major boost in quality for Ajax, both on and off the field, particularly for their group of young players. With his impressive resume, including winning the Champions League and numerous other trophies with Liverpool, Henderson’s addition is a significant moment for the club.
Ajax’s focus will now be on climbing up the Eredivisie table, currently sitting in fifth place. However, their position has improved since the end of October, when they had lost five of their opening eight matches. Henderson will don the No. 6 shirt for his new club, and all eyes will be on him as he aims to make an immediate impact in his Ajax debut.
