Jordan Henderson is on the verge of joining Ajax after Al Ettifaq mutually agreed to end his contract with the Saudi Arabian club.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has dismissed reports suggesting that Jordan Henderson is set to make a return to the club. The England midfielder is said to be closing in on a move to Ajax, after terminating his contract with Saudi Pro League club Al Ettifaq.
Henderson’s time in Saudi Arabia has been met with difficulties, as he reportedly struggled to settle in the country. Despite earning a staggering £700,000 a week, the 33-year-old has only made 17 appearances for Al Ettifaq.
According to various reports, including The Athletic, Henderson has flown back to the UK in an attempt to secure a permanent move to Dutch giants Ajax. This news comes after the midfielder faced criticism for his decision to move to Saudi Arabia, given his previous advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights.
England manager Gareth Southgate has come to Henderson’s defense, expressing his confusion over the booing the midfielder received during a friendly match against Australia in October. Southgate highlighted Henderson’s exceptional commitment and contributions to the national team, emphasizing his importance as a role model for younger players.
Ajax, who have recently appointed John van ‘t Schip as manager, have experienced a resurgence in form after a difficult start to the season. Currently sitting in fifth place in the Eredivisie, the Dutch giants have managed to climb up the table after initially struggling near the relegation zone.
As the transfer saga surrounding Henderson continues, it remains to be seen whether the midfielder will indeed make a return to Liverpool or secure a move to Ajax.
