Jonas Eidevall: Arsenal has announced that the Swede has stepped down following the derby loss to Chelsea over the weekend and the defeat to Bayern Munich in the UWCL.
**Arsenal Women Part Ways with Manager Jonas Eidevall**
In a significant shake-up at the club, Arsenal Women have announced that manager Jonas Eidevall has resigned from his position with immediate effect. This decision comes on the back of a disappointing run of results that has left the team struggling in the Women’s Super League (WSL).
Eidevall’s departure follows a series of underwhelming performances, including a frustrating home draw against Everton, a heavy 5-2 defeat away to Bayern Munich, and a recent 2-1 loss at home to title rivals Chelsea. These results have raised serious questions about the team’s direction and competitiveness at the highest level.
The Swedish manager joined Arsenal in 2021, stepping in to replace Joe Montemurro. During his tenure, Eidevall enjoyed some success, winning the League Cup twice and finishing as runners-up in the WSL during his first season. However, he struggled to bridge the gap between Arsenal and the dominant forces of Chelsea and Manchester City.
In the wake of Eidevall’s resignation, the club has confirmed that assistant manager Renée Slegers will take charge on an interim basis. Sporting Director Edu Gaspar expressed gratitude for Eidevall’s contributions, stating, “We thank Jonas for his commitment to the club and achievements here since joining us in 2021. We have great respect for the dedication and commitment he showed to our women’s first team and recognise the role he has played in the growth and development of Arsenal Women. We all wish him the very best for the future.”
Gaspar also highlighted the club’s immediate focus on appointing a new head coach while supporting Slegers as she prepares to lead the team through two crucial fixtures this week.
Clare Wheatley, Director of Women’s Football, added, “We’d like to say a huge thank you to Jonas for his hard work and dedication to Arsenal Football Club over the past three years. Jonas has brought us back-to-back trophies in the last two seasons, together with many memorable moments on the pitch. We wish Jonas and his family the best of health, happiness and success for the future. We have full confidence in Renée to take responsibility for the team in the interim period.”
Eidevall arrived at Arsenal after a successful spell in Sweden, where he won three Damallsvenskan titles with FC Rosengard. His first season at Arsenal saw the team finish just a point behind champions Chelsea, and in his second season, they reached the semi-finals of the Champions League. However, last season proved to be a disappointment, as the team failed to qualify for the group stages of European competition and finished a distant third in the title race.
As Arsenal Women look to regroup and refocus, fans will be keen to see how Slegers steers the team in the coming weeks. The upcoming fixtures will be crucial, starting with their match against Valerenga in the Women’s Champions League, which supporters can catch live on TNT Sports and discovery+.
