JJ Watt, co-owner of Burnley, expresses his disapproval of the controversial Luton equaliser, referring to it as a decision that is truly shameful.
J.J. Watt, the famous NFL star and minority owner of Burnley, was present at Turf Moor as he watched his team face off against West Ham United. The match took place on November 25, 2023, in Burnley, England.
However, it was not just the game that caught Watt’s attention. He took to social media to express his disappointment with the decision to allow Luton a last-minute equalizer against Burnley. The Premier League relegation battle was at stake, and Burnley had been on the verge of securing three crucial points.
The controversy arose when Carlton Morris of Luton headed in the equalizer in the 92nd minute. Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford claimed he had been fouled mid-air by Luton striker Elijah Adebayo. Despite VAR checking the incident, the goal was not ruled out.
Watt, being new to the ownership role, did not hold back in expressing his frustration. He posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, stating, “I’m new to this ownership thing, so if I get fined by the Premier League, so be it.. This is as blatant and obvious of a foul as you could have. To miss this on the field AND miss this on VAR is truly disgraceful.”
The draw against Luton meant that Burnley remained second from bottom in the Premier League table, with Luton sitting just four points ahead in 18th place. Both Luton and bottom-placed Sheffield United have a game in hand on Burnley, making the situation even more precarious for the club.
Watt’s frustration was shared by others, including former Manchester City player Vincent Kompany. In an interview with TNT Sports, Watt expressed his confusion over inconsistent refereeing decisions. He questioned why a soft foul against Aston Villa resulted in a penalty, while the clear attempt to impede the goalkeeper’s movement in the Luton incident was overlooked.
With a tough run of games against Manchester City, Liverpool, and Arsenal on the horizon, Burnley faces an uphill battle to climb out of the relegation zone. The team will need to regroup and find a way to secure crucial points in the coming weeks.
