Jan Oblak makes two crucial saves during the penalty shoot-out to help Atletico Madrid progress in the Champions League.
Atletico Madrid produced a stunning comeback to secure their spot in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals with a thrilling 3-2 penalty shoot-out victory over Inter Milan in the last 16.
The Spanish side fought back from a 2-0 aggregate deficit to claim a memorable win. Inter, who had triumphed 1-0 in the first leg at the San Siro, extended their advantage when Federico Dimarco finished off a delightful move to open the scoring in the 33rd minute. However, their position of strength quickly evaporated as Antoine Griezmann capitalized on some poor defending to equalize just two minutes later.
With the match hanging in the balance, substitute Memphis Depay stepped up for Atletico and delivered a clinical strike in the 87th minute to send the game into extra time. Despite Inter’s Marcus Thuram squandering two golden opportunities to seal the victory, the Italian giants paid the price for their missed chances.
In the penalty shoot-out, Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak emerged as the hero, saving spot-kicks from Alexis Sanchez and Davy Klaassen. Inter’s Lautaro Martínez then compounded their misery by blasting his effort wide, condemning his team to their first defeat of the year.
Although Saul Niguez also had a penalty saved by Inter keeper Yann Sommer, it ultimately had no impact on the outcome as Diego Simeone’s side secured their place in the quarter-finals. The draw for the next round will take place on Friday, with Italian hopes in the tournament extinguished for this year.
