Jadon Sancho has finalized his move back to Borussia Dortmund on a temporary basis until the conclusion of the season, departing from Manchester United.
Jadon Sancho, the talented England winger, has made a sensational return to Borussia Dortmund on loan, marking his comeback to the Bundesliga club after two-and-a-half years at Manchester United. The loan deal will see Sancho stay with Dortmund until the end of the 2023/24 season.
Sebastian Kehl, Dortmund’s sporting director, expressed his excitement about Sancho’s return, stating, “Jadon is an absolute difference player and I’m looking forward to seeing him back in black and yellow soon. He knows this city, Signal Iduna Park, our fans and our club.” Kehl also expressed confidence in Sancho’s ability to quickly settle back in, regain top form, and contribute to the team’s goals for the season.
Sancho himself shared his enthusiasm about rejoining Dortmund, saying, “When I came into the dressing room today, it felt like ‘coming home’. I know the club inside and out, I’ve always been very close with the fans here, and I’ve never lost contact with those in charge.” He eagerly awaits reuniting with his teammates, stepping onto the pitch, playing with joy, setting up goals, scoring goals, and helping Dortmund secure qualification for the Champions League.
Sancho’s time at Manchester United was marred by a falling out with manager Erik ten Hag, resulting in his absence from competitive games since August. The dispute arose when Ten Hag criticized Sancho’s performances in training, a claim the player vehemently denied on social media. Sancho’s refusal to apologize led to his exclusion from the squad and training separately from the first team, as the disciplinary issue remains unresolved.
Since his move from Dortmund to Manchester United for £73 million in 2021, Sancho has made 82 appearances for the club, contributing to 18 goals with 12 goals and six assists. He secured his only piece of silverware with United as a substitute in their 2-0 Carabao Cup victory over Newcastle United.
During his previous stint at Dortmund, Sancho showcased his immense talent, scoring 50 goals and providing 64 assists in 137 appearances. He played a crucial role in Dortmund’s triumphs, including scoring in the 2019 German Supercup final and being named player of the match in a 2-0 victory over Bayern Munich under Lucien Favre. In 2021, he helped Dortmund secure the DFB-Pokal title, scoring twice in the final’s 4-1 win over RB Leipzig alongside Erling Haaland.
Sancho’s return to Dortmund is a much-needed boost for the club, currently sitting fifth in the Bundesliga and trailing 15 points behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen. They are also six points away from securing the fourth spot, currently held by RB Leipzig.
