Ilkay Gundogan cautious of Gareth Southgate’s team despite facing criticism
Ilkay Gundogan, the Germany captain and former Manchester City player, has expressed his belief that England should not be underestimated despite their lackluster performances in the group stage of Euro 2024. Despite finishing at the top of Group C, England struggled to impress in their matches against Denmark and Slovenia. However, Gundogan still considers them to be among the tournament favorites, alongside France.
Gundogan acknowledged the importance of getting results in these tournaments, as it boosts confidence and motivation. He also praised England’s experience in knockout matches, although he understands the criticism that they could have performed better.
As for Germany, Gundogan plays a crucial role as an attacking focal point behind the front line. He credits his freedom in the final third to the influence of central midfield conductor Toni Kroos. Gundogan highlighted Kroos’ quality, calmness on the ball, and consistency, which provide stability to the team and allow him to get into dangerous positions.
Gundogan also discussed his Barcelona teammate, 16-year-old Lamine Yamal, who has been drawing comparisons to Lionel Messi and Ronaldinho. He described Yamal’s performances at such a young age as “crazy” and praised his confidence and humility. Gundogan expressed his hope for Yamal to stay healthy and reach the top of world football.
If Germany and Spain both win their upcoming matches, Gundogan and Yamal could potentially face each other in the quarter-finals. Gundogan spoke highly of Yamal’s character and wished him success in his career.
