Ian Maatsen, a defender from Chelsea, has recently joined Borussia Dortmund on a loan transfer, where he will now be playing alongside Jadon Sancho.
Borussia Dortmund have announced the loan signing of Ian Maatsen from Chelsea for the remainder of the season. The 21-year-old left-back, who recently extended his contract at Stamford Bridge until 2026, has made the move to the Bundesliga.
Maatsen joined Chelsea from PSV Eindhoven in 2018 and had an impressive season at Burnley last year, contributing four goals and six assists. Despite making 15 appearances for Chelsea this season, he only started in three matches and had been linked with a move away from the club in search of regular first-team football.
During his loan spell at Burnley, Maatsen caught the attention of Vincent Kompany’s team, who made a £31.5 million bid for him in the summer. However, he turned down the move. Manchester City were also reportedly interested in the Dutch player, but he has now chosen to move to Germany for the rest of the campaign.
Maatsen expressed his excitement about the move, stating, “Borussia Dortmund made a lot of effort to sign me. I’ve been following BVB and their fans for a long time and even attended the Champions League match in Manchester in the autumn of 2022 to see the team live on the pitch. I’m very happy that the loan has now worked out. I promise that I’ll give my all to help the team be successful and am really looking forward to the Yellow Wall.”
Dortmund coach Edin Terzic also commented on the signing, saying, “We hope that Ian will quickly fit into the group and become an important factor for us.” Dortmund’s sporting director, Sebastian Kehl, added, “With his strengths, Ian fits our requirements. He’s a player who brings a lot of pace, has a strong left foot, and can also play in various positions. We’re very pleased that we were able to complete this loan before our first Bundesliga match of the year.”
This marks Dortmund’s second loan signing from the Premier League this week, as they had already secured the return of former winger Jadon Sancho on loan from Manchester United until the end of the season. Sancho fell out with Erik ten Hag earlier in the season and was subsequently excluded from the first-team squad.
