Hammers faced a disputed loss as the home team secured a last-minute win in the UEFA Europa League.

Freiburg emerged victorious in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League last-16 encounter against West Ham, thanks to a late goal and a fortunate escape from a VAR penalty appeal.

The Bundesliga side struggled to find the back of the net for most of the game, but a momentary lapse in concentration from the Hammers in the 81st minute allowed Roland Sallai to create an opportunity, which substitute Michael Gregoritsch duly converted.

Goalmouth action was scarce throughout the match, with West Ham gradually asserting their dominance as the game progressed. It was only through the heroics of Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu that Jarrod Bowen’s attempt on goal was denied in the second half.

However, the real drama unfolded in injury time when Noah Weisshaupt unintentionally handled the ball in the box. With his hand inadvertently placed over his head as Tomas Soucek deflected the ball towards him, a penalty seemed imminent as the referee consulted the VAR screen. However, to the dismay of West Ham, the referee ultimately decided against awarding a spot kick.

The second leg of this thrilling encounter will take place at West Ham’s home ground next week, where the Hammers will be looking to overturn Freiburg’s slender advantage.
