Gianluca Mancini shines once more as Roma take the lead in the first leg against Milan.
Gianluca Mancini emerged as the hero once again for AS Roma, securing a crucial 1-0 victory against AC Milan in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals at the iconic San Siro stadium.
The centre-back’s headed goal from a corner in the 18th minute mirrored his match-winning strike against Lazio in the Rome Derby just days earlier.
Under the guidance of manager Daniele De Rossi, Roma displayed a dominant performance throughout the game, surprising the in-form Rossoneri with their new tactical approach. Dictating play and ending a nine-match winless streak against Milan, the visitors showcased their confidence on the pitch.
Mancini’s goal came after Mike Maignan, Milan’s goalkeeper, was forced into a sharp save following a deflected effort from Stephan El Shaarawy. Milan struggled to respond, with Tijjani Reijnders being the only player to test Roma’s goalkeeper, Mile Svilar, with four attempts.
However, Milan rallied in the final 15 minutes, pushing for an equalizer. Olivier Giroud had a golden opportunity to level the score from close range, but his finish struck the crossbar and sailed over. This unfortunate miss marked the end of Milan’s eight-match unbeaten streak.
Having lost in last season’s Europa League final on penalties to Sevilla, Roma will now aim to secure their place in the semi-finals as they head to the Stadio Olimpico for the second leg. With their sights set on a second European title in three years, following their triumph in the 2021/22 Conference League, Roma will be eager to maintain their momentum and progress in the competition.
