Five players from Manchester United whose contracts are set to end in 2024.
Manchester United face a challenging task with their new co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, as they must decide which key players will leave the club on free transfers. Several senior squad members have the option to negotiate pre-contracts with clubs outside of England or wait until the summer to explore their options.
One player who could be on his way out is Anthony Martial. The 28-year-old spent the second half of the 2021/22 season on loan at Sevilla and seemed to have lost the trust of previous managers Ralf Rangnick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Although he showed some improvement under manager Erik ten Hag, scoring nine goals, his limited impact this season suggests he may be allowed to move on.
Raphael Varane, 30, has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter since his move from Real Madrid. Even when both he and Jonny Evans were fit, Evans, 35, was sometimes preferred. There have been reports suggesting Varane could be tempted by a return to Real, and if the club does not activate their 12-month extension clause, he could be one of the older players let go.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s contract runs until 2024, with the option to extend for another year. The 26-year-old has struggled with his offensive contributions and shares right-back duties with Diogo Dalot. While a return to Crystal Palace has been suggested, another year at United could give him a final chance to prove himself.
Sofyan Amrabat and Sergio Reguilon arrived on loan in the summer. Amrabat was expected to make a dynamic impact, but reports suggest he is already set to leave. Reguilon, on the other hand, has been solid without being spectacular. Amrabat will see out his loan deal, while it remains to be seen if Tottenham will recall Reguilon in January.
Overall, Manchester United have some tough decisions to make regarding their players’ futures, and it will be interesting to see which players will stay and which will depart in the coming months.
