Exclusive: James Milner acknowledges the excitement surrounding Evan Ferguson, his teammate at Brighton, but assures that Ferguson is in the optimal environment.
Brighton & Hove Albion’s Evan Ferguson has been receiving high praise from his teammate James Milner, who describes the young striker’s finishing as “phenomenal”. Despite recent transfer rumors, Milner believes Ferguson is in the “right place” at Brighton.
Ferguson, who is only 19 years old, has already scored six goals in 21 appearances this season, including a memorable hat-trick against Newcastle. Milner, who joined Brighton from Liverpool last summer, spoke highly of Ferguson’s abilities in front of goal during an interview with TNT Sports’ Steve Sidwell.
Milner said, “I think he’s a great lad, first and foremost. Wants to learn, wants to get about, which is so important. He’s in a great place in terms of the club, the manager he’s working with. Senior players he works with, looking at someone like Welbz (Danny Welbeck) – how he goes about his business and how he plays. He’s in a great spot.”
The experienced midfielder also highlighted Ferguson’s finishing skills, stating, “His finishing is phenomenal, you know, just so good. If a chance is falling, you want it to go to him. He had a chance at West Ham, we were joking about it. He didn’t score but he made it out of nothing – he hit it instinctively.”
Despite his praise, Milner acknowledged that Ferguson still has a lot to learn and believes Brighton is the best place for him to continue his development. He mentioned the areas in which Ferguson can improve, particularly his hold-up play, but emphasized the importance of learning from players like Welbeck.
Milner concluded by saying, “His attitude is fantastic but his ability is so good. It’s important that we protect him. There’s hype around him, as there should be, but he’s definitely in the right place at this moment in time and hopefully he’ll keep banging them in for us.”
