Exclusive: Crystal Palace is approaching the match against Liverpool with the intention of securing a victory, as Oliver Glasner seeks to turn things around.

Glasner’s Eagles Set Sights on Liverpool Victory

Oliver Glasner has made it clear that Crystal Palace will approach their upcoming clash with Liverpool with a winning mindset, as he seeks to ignite his side’s season. The Eagles find themselves in a precarious position, currently winless in the Premier League after drawing three and losing three of their first six matches.

With Palace languishing in the relegation zone, they will host a formidable Liverpool side at Selhurst Park, who sit atop the table with five wins from six. This eagerly anticipated encounter will be broadcast live on TNT Sports and discovery+ this Saturday.

Despite their struggles this season, Palace can draw confidence from their last meeting with Liverpool, where they secured a stunning victory at Anfield in the spring. That triumph was part of a late-season resurgence that saw them defeat the likes of Manchester United, Newcastle, and Aston Villa, ultimately finishing in a respectable 10th place—joint-highest in the Premier League era.

Glasner, who took over from Roy Hodgson just two months prior to that memorable win, believes that maintaining a consistent approach against top teams is crucial for his players’ confidence. “We’re always going into the game to win it,” he asserted. “Regardless of which team we play, whether at home or away.”

Reflecting on the previous victory over Liverpool, Glasner noted that it came during a time when his squad was still finding their rhythm. That win marked just his second in charge, but it sparked a run of form that saw Palace claim five victories in their final six matches of the season.

“It’s maybe a little bit easier to play as an underdog when expectations are low,” he explained. “But that result gave us the belief we needed for a strong finish to the campaign. When you’re on a winning streak, you don’t think about being underdogs or favourites; you just focus on showing your quality and playing freely. That’s the mindset we need to rediscover.”

In his 13 matches since taking over, Glasner has guided Palace to seven wins, amassing 24 points and scoring 29 goals from an expected goals (xG) tally of 21.15. However, this season has been a stark contrast, with the Eagles still searching for their first win and managing only five goals from an xG of 7.56, according to Opta.

On a positive note, Palace have seen an increase in possession, averaging 51% per 90 minutes compared to 43% last season under Glasner. The 50-year-old is keenly aware that past successes do not guarantee future results.

“When there is a break, you have to prove yourself again,” he lamented. “Just because we had a great season last year doesn’t mean we will have another one this year. It’s like winning the 100 meters in the Olympics four years ago; you have to work hard to deserve it again. That’s what we’re doing now, and I believe we will see the results.”

Players Eager to Improve

Glasner is acutely aware of the need for improvement and is confident that he and his players will find a way to turn their fortunes around. “You get what you deserve,” he remarked regarding the club’s current form. “With the same performances, we could have perhaps two more wins. But nobody will hand us the points. Every game teaches us how to improve and develop.”

He added, “Often when you lose, everything seems negative, but there are always positive moments to take away. Conversely, you can play poorly and still win. It’s important to be critical and assess our performances. I believe our performances have been okay, but not good enough to secure wins. What gives me confidence is seeing the players’ desire to improve and return to their best form. We’re staying calm and united, and I’m confident that success will come.”
