Everton and Crystal Palace drew 1-1, with Amadou Onana saving a point for Everton in the Premier League match while Oliver Glasner looked on.
“He has a future,” says Pep with a smile in comment about Mbappe’s qualities.
Crystal Palace began life without Roy Hodgson with a 1-1 draw at Everton after substitute Amadou Onana grabbed a late equaliser for the hosts. Ray Lewington and Paddy McCarthy took charge of matters for Palace at Goodison Park, with Oliver Glasner watching on from the stands after his appointment was confirmed earlier in the day.
The Austrian will have been pleased with what he witnessed as Palace came agonisingly close to returning to winning ways after Jordan Ayew’s stunner midway through the second half gave them the lead. The goal lit up a largely forgettable game with few chances of note, but the Toffees hit back with six minutes of normal time remaining through Onana’s header.
Sean Dyche may believe his side had done enough to win the game and will look back on two gilt-edged opportunities passed up by the misfiring Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The result takes Everton out of the bottom three above Luton Town on goal difference, while Palace climb to 15th, five points clear of the drop.
Talking Point – Palace offer an insight into life with Glasner
He may not have been on the touchline but there were certainly strong indications that Glasner influenced how Palace set up tactically at Goodison Park. Like Glasner’s former teams, Palace were very well organised in a five-man defence and compact in midfield, with their full-backs providing a useful outlet on the counter-attack. And the adjustments paid dividends as Palace manage to plug the leak in their defence, having conceded 14 goals in their last four to secure what could be a crucial point come the end of May.
Everton, meanwhile, are out of the relegation zone but will be frustrated they couldn’t bring an end to their winless run, which now stretches to eight league games. The muted reaction by the home fans suggest that they demand more from their team.
Player of the Match – Dwight McNeil (Everton)
The former Burnley midfielder was Everton’s bright spark and could have finished with two assists had Calvert-Lewin been in better form.
