Euro 2024: Ukraine makes a thrilling comeback against Bosnia and Herzegovina to move closer to securing qualification.
Players of Ukraine celebrated in jubilation after securing a thrilling victory against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the UEFA EURO 2024 Play-Offs semifinal match. The game, held at the Bilino Polje Stadium in Zenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina, saw Ukraine stage an incredible comeback to move closer to qualifying for Euro 2024.
The match took an unexpected turn when Bosnia and Herzegovina took the lead in the 56th minute. Dennis Hadzikadunic’s strike deflected off Ukrainian defender Mykola Matviyenko, catching goalkeeper Andriy Lunin off guard. Despite enjoying the majority of possession, Ukraine struggled to find a breakthrough until the final 10 minutes of play.
In the 85th minute, Chelsea’s Mykhailo Mudryk played a crucial role in Ukraine’s first goal. He delivered a precise cross-field pass from the left wing, finding Yukhym Konoplya, who then passed the ball into the penalty box. Roman Yaremchuk seized the opportunity and turned the ball into the net, equalizing the score.
Just three minutes later, Yaremchuk turned provider, setting up Artem Dovbyk for the winning goal. Yaremchuk delivered a perfect cross, allowing Dovbyk to head the ball home and complete the remarkable comeback.
Ukraine’s next challenge will be a Path B play-off final against Iceland, who also overcame a 1-0 deficit in their semifinal match against hosts Israel. Eran Zahavi opened the scoring for Israel, but goals from Albert Gudmundsson and Arnor Ingvi Traustason turned the game in Iceland’s favor. Gudmundsson completed his hat-trick in the second half, securing a convincing victory for Iceland.
In the Path B play-off final, Georgia will face Greece. Georgia defeated Luxembourg 2-0, with Budu Zivzivadze scoring both goals. Meanwhile, Greece thrashed Kazakhstan 5-0, with goals from Anastasios Bakasetas, Dimitrios Pelkas, Fotis Ioannidis, Dimitrios Kourbelis, and an own goal from Yerkin Tapalov.
Poland also enjoyed a high-scoring match in their Path A play-off semifinal against Estonia, winning 5-1. Przemyslaw Frankowski opened the scoring, and Piotr Zielinski, Jakub Piotrowski, and Sebastian Szymanski added to Poland’s tally in the second half. Estonia managed a consolation goal through Martin Vetkal in the 78th minute.
Poland’s next opponent will be Wales, who secured a dominant 4-1 victory against Finland. The play-off finals for all paths are scheduled to take place on Tuesday, March 26.
