Euro 2024: Switzerland coach Murat Yakin anticipates a ‘competitive match’ against England, acknowledging that the Three Lions have faced challenges.
Switzerland head coach Murat Yakin has analyzed England’s struggles at Euro 2024 ahead of their quarter-final clash. Gareth Southgate’s men narrowly avoided elimination in their last-16 tie against Slovakia, with Jude Bellingham’s spectacular bicycle kick in the 95th minute saving them. This was England’s third consecutive draw in 90 minutes at the tournament before Harry Kane secured a winner in extra time.
Switzerland, on the other hand, put on an impressive display against Italy in the last-16 and are favored to progress against England. Yakin acknowledged England’s difficulties in games where the opposition plays defensively, stating that it is challenging to break down a team with a solid defensive block. However, he believes that facing an opponent that wants to play football will work in Switzerland’s favor.
Switzerland finished second in Group A, defeating Hungary and drawing with Scotland and Germany. Their standout performance came against Italy in the first knockout round, where they secured a comfortable 2-0 victory. Yakin is confident that Switzerland can defeat England and reach the semi-finals for the first time in their history.
Yakin also mentioned his good relationship with Southgate, stating that they understand each other as they have had previous meetings. He acknowledged the pressure on Southgate due to the abundance of talented players at his disposal and the expectation for good results. However, Yakin believes it is not his place to explain the situation of England and their coach.
Yakin highlighted the threat posed by Jude Bellingham, who has had an impressive debut season in Spain with Real Madrid. He emphasized the need to focus on each player as they can make a difference in a big tournament like the quarter-finals. However, Yakin remains confident in Switzerland’s abilities and is focused on implementing his team’s strategy.
England and Switzerland will face off in Dusseldorf on Saturday, July 6, at 5pm UK time for a spot in the semi-finals.
