Euro 2024: Kobbie Mainoo’s rapid ascent towards European success with England.
Gareth Southgate faces a monumental challenge as England prepare to take on the best team in Euro 2024 with just one day of preparation. Kobbie Mainoo, the rising star of English football, reflected on his incredible journey after playing a crucial role in England’s progression to the final.
At just 19 years old, Mainoo has been a standout performer for both his national team and Manchester United this season. His maturity on the pitch far surpasses his tender years, as demonstrated in Wednesday night’s semi-final victory over the Netherlands. Mainoo expressed his disbelief at how far he has come in such a short time.
Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Mainoo said, “It’s an indescribable feeling. It’s happened quickly, but I’ve been taking it day by day, game by game, and now we’re in the European Championship final. We’re all buzzing, it’s been quite a journey to get here. I believe we’ve built on our performances leading up to this point, and I feel like the only way is up. It’s time to make history.”
Mainoo went on to discuss England’s impressive first-half performance, particularly their control in midfield, which has sometimes been lacking in this tournament. He highlighted the contributions of himself, Phil Foden, Declan Rice, and Jude Bellingham in gaining control of the game.
“In the first half, everything was clicking for the whole team. Everyone was getting on the ball,” Mainoo explained. “We had the game under control in the middle of the park. In the second half, we had to grind it out. It was tough, but the entire squad played their part. The impact off the bench from Cole Palmer and Ollie was immense. What a finish, what a way to end it.”
However, England’s biggest challenge lies ahead as they face a star-studded Spain side in Berlin. Mainoo believes that the team is building up to an exciting climax and is confident they will be ready for the test.
“Spain is a formidable side, and they have defeated some top teams,” Mainoo acknowledged. “But we will be prepared for that. We have built up so much momentum, and now the only way is up. We’re going to give it everything we’ve got.”
As England prepares for the Euro 2024 final, the nation holds its breath, hoping that Mainoo and his teammates can make history and bring home the trophy.
