Euro 2024: Gareth Southgate and Harry Kane acknowledge that there is a significant amount of work ahead following England’s draw with Denmark.
Gareth Southgate has expressed his concern over the performance of his England side after they drew 1-1 with Denmark in their second group game at Euro 2024. Despite being at the top of the group after two games, England appeared lackluster and overwhelmed by the Danish team.
Southgate did not hold back in his assessment of the match, admitting that his team is facing technical and tactical issues that contributed to their struggles. He acknowledged that there is a lot of work to be done by him and his staff.
The England manager stated, “Clearly not what we would have hoped for. At the moment we’re not using the ball well enough and we have to accept if you do that, you’re going to suffer at times as we have tonight. We know there’s another level that we’ve got to find. There’s a huge amount of work.”
One of the issues highlighted was England’s defense consistently dropping deep, which allowed Denmark to apply pressure. Southgate denied that this was a deliberate tactic and acknowledged that it was a problem that needed to be addressed.
England captain Harry Kane also admitted that the team dropping deep was an issue that needed fixing. He acknowledged that they struggled to apply pressure when the opposition dropped deeper and that improvements needed to be made.
Despite the disappointing performance, Southgate attempted to make changes in the second half by introducing fresh faces. However, the impact was not as significant as he had hoped.
Southgate explained his decision to substitute Kane before 70 minutes, stating that fresh legs and energy were needed to press at that stage of the game. He also mentioned that Kane had only played one full 90 minutes in over a month.
England vice-captain Kyle Walker took a practical approach, acknowledging that there is room for improvement despite being at the top of the group. He emphasized the need for better build-up play and winning the second ball.
Despite the draw against Denmark, England is still in a good position to qualify from Group C. They will face Slovenia in their final group game on Tuesday, June 25.
