Euro 2024: Could this be the best save in Euro history? Mert Gunok makes an ‘incredible’ stop to secure Turkey’s victory.
Koeman insists Netherlands must maintain high level after impressive performance
In a thrilling last-16 clash on Tuesday, Turkey secured their place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 by defeating Austria, marking their return to this stage of the tournament for the first time since 2008. The match was filled with excitement, and it was goalkeeper Mert Gunok’s incredible last-minute save that ultimately sealed the victory for Turkey.
The game got off to a flying start, with Merih Demiral scoring the fastest goal in Euros knockouts just 57 seconds into the match. He later doubled Turkey’s lead in the 60th minute.
However, Austria fought back, with Michael Gregoritsch finding the back of the net just seven minutes later. They continued to press for an equalizer, and in the dying moments of the game, Christoph Baumgartner’s header seemed destined for the goal. But Gunok produced a save that has been hailed as one of the greatest in Euros history, denying Austria the chance to force extra time.
Former England player Joleon Lescott, speaking on ITV, described Gunok’s save as the “save of the tournament,” praising his agility, composure, and strength. Gunok’s heroics mean that Turkey will now face the Netherlands in the quarter-finals.
Lescott also commended Turkey’s overall performance, describing it as “organised chaos” with a well-structured counter-attacking style. Lee Dixon, another former England player, called Gunok a “rock at the back” for Turkey and highlighted the energy and unpredictability of their wingers. Gunok’s save was hailed as an “absolute worldie” by Dixon, who praised Turkey’s deserved victory.
Chris Sutton, a former Blackburn Rovers and Chelsea forward, was also impressed by Turkey’s resilience and Gunok’s heroics. He described their performance as a great story and highlighted their spirit in holding off Austria’s relentless attacks. Sutton believes that Turkey has what it takes to defeat the Netherlands in the quarter-finals.
Turkey will face Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands side on July 6, with the opportunity to reach the semi-finals for only the second time in their history. Koeman has emphasized the importance of maintaining their high level of performance after their outstanding display against Austria.
