Enzo Maresca: Chelsea is unable to match Manchester City and Arsenal in the race for trophies this season.
**Maresca: Chelsea Can’t Compete with City or Arsenal This Season**
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has candidly stated that his side is unlikely to compete with the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal in the current campaign. The Italian, who took over from Mauricio Pochettino this summer, has acknowledged the challenges that lie ahead for his squad.
Maresca’s appointment followed a tumultuous period for the club, with Pochettino dismissed after struggling to establish a consistent starting XI that could meet the expectations of both fans and the club’s hierarchy. Despite the managerial upheaval, the new boss seems to have found a system that works for the sizeable squad at his disposal.
In a recent UEFA Europa Conference League clash, Chelsea showcased their attacking prowess, securing a 4-2 victory against Gent. The win has propelled them to fourth place in the Premier League, just one point behind both Arsenal and Manchester City, and two points adrift of league leaders Liverpool. Notably, three of Chelsea’s new signings—Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Renato Veiga, and Pedro Neto—found the back of the net, alongside Christopher Nkunku.
However, as the Blues prepare for their upcoming match against Nottingham Forest, Maresca remains realistic about the competition. He highlighted the dominance of Arsenal and Manchester City, who are expected to battle it out at the top of the table for a third consecutive season.
In a press conference ahead of Sunday’s fixture, Maresca expressed his concerns, stating, “I really don’t think we can compete with City or Arsenal. The reason is that City has worked with the same manager for nine years and Arsenal for five years. If you want to compete for big things, you need that time.”
As Chelsea fans look on with hope, it remains to be seen whether Maresca can bridge the gap between his side and the league’s elite.
