Donny van de Beek departs from Manchester United and signs a loan deal with Eintracht Frankfurt, including the possibility of a permanent transfer.
Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek has secured a loan move to Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Frankfurt for the remainder of the 2023/24 season. The deal was officially confirmed by both clubs on Monday, as the January transfer window swung open. Reports suggest that Frankfurt have the option to make the move permanent.
Van de Beek has struggled for game time at United this season, featuring in just two matches. The Dutchman will be hoping for more opportunities in Germany for the rest of the campaign. United released a statement expressing their well wishes for the midfielder’s time at Frankfurt.
This marks Van de Beek’s second loan spell away from United, following his temporary stint at Everton in the 2021/22 season, where he made only seven appearances. Since joining United from Ajax for £40 million at the start of the 2020/21 campaign, the 26-year-old has faced difficulties under former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. In his 62 appearances for the club, he has scored three goals across all competitions.
Under current United boss Erik ten Hag, Van de Beek played a crucial role for Ajax, helping them reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League in 2019. However, he has struggled to replicate that form at Old Trafford, with injuries also hampering his progress. Last season, he was sidelined for a significant period due to a knee injury.
Van de Beek will now aim to make a strong impact during his time at Frankfurt, as he seeks to reclaim his spot in the Dutch national team ahead of the 2024 Euros this summer. Frankfurt currently sit in sixth place in the Bundesliga table and will be in a fierce battle with Dortmund, RB Leipzig, and Stuttgart for a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League.
