Despite facing criticism, Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino remains determined to stay with the team and has no intention of resigning.
Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino has made it clear that he has no intention of leaving the club, despite the criticism they have been facing. The team has been booed off the pitch by supporters in recent games and currently sits in 11th place in the Premier League.
Since Todd Boehly and the Clearlake consortium took over Chelsea, they have spent around £1 billion, mostly on young talents like Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo. Pochettino is the third manager since Roman Abramovich took charge, but the promised success has yet to materialize.
Last season, Chelsea finished 12th and although they reached the League Cup final, losing to Liverpool, their recent form has been disappointing, with only one win in their last five league games, including a 4-2 defeat at home to Wolves.
When asked if he would ever consider leaving Chelsea, Pochettino responded emphatically, “Ah no, no, no! Why? Never! We love a challenge. The challenge is massive and I come here to accept the project and challenge, knowing it is never easy with the pressure and the feeling that you are Chelsea and you need to win.”
Pochettino acknowledges that Chelsea fans have been accustomed to constant success over the past two decades, but he believes they need to be more patient with the young squad that is still in transition. He emphasizes the support and guidance they provide to the players, saying, “It’s true that (the players) are young, but we like to help them. We like to talk, to train, to support. We are supporting them.”
He also criticizes the unfair judgment of the team, stating, “The fans don’t know. The players are so young, playing at Wembley in a final. Maybe they didn’t sleep the night before. Sometimes, to analyze with different parameters and the way that you assess is completely unfair. Today it is a different Chelsea. If you are going to judge us, comparing the past of Chelsea, for sure no-one is going to win. No-one is going to succeed. No-one is going to be nice with you.”
There have been rumors of another managerial change at Chelsea if there is no significant improvement, with some supporters even calling for a return of Jose Mourinho. However, Pochettino believes that the fans need to understand the different project the club is currently undertaking. He explains, “The fans are not going to love any more another coach at Chelsea. If you compare with the past, when you are in a different project, people need to understand. I’ve tried to explain. I talk, I move my mouth, but you don’t hear.”
Despite the challenges, Pochettino remains committed to the project, stating, “I knew it was going to be tough. I knew we were going to need time and belief. The project is about young players, building a new team.”
