Cristiano Ronaldo, the iconic forward and former Manchester United star, has been closely monitoring the struggles of his old club. Speaking at the Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai, where he was honoured with the 2024 Best Middle East Player award, Ronaldo expressed his belief that the current “storm” surrounding United could soon pass under the guidance of new manager Ruben Amorim.
The Portuguese legend, who experienced the glory days of United under Sir Alex Ferguson and the challenges of the post-Ferguson era during his second spell with the club, reiterated his deep affection for Manchester United. He acknowledged the difficulties Amorim is facing as he navigates the pressures of managing one of the world’s most storied football clubs.
Since taking the reins last month, Amorim has had a rocky start, losing five of his first ten matches, including a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Wolves on Boxing Day. However, Ronaldo remains optimistic about his compatriot’s ability to weather the storm in the Premier League. “He did a fantastic job in Portugal with my Sporting,” Ronaldo said, praising Amorim’s previous success. “But as I said before, the Premier League is a different beast. It’s a different league. It’s the most competitive league in the world. It will be tough.”
Ronaldo believes that while the challenges are significant, there is hope for a turnaround. “The storm will continue but the storm will finish, and the sun will rise,” he stated. “Fingers crossed that things will be good with him, and I hope the best for Manchester United because this is a club that I still love.”
The 39-year-old also weighed in on the broader issues plaguing the club, suggesting that the problems extend beyond the managerial position. He likened United’s situation to that of a sick fish in an aquarium, emphasising that simply changing the coach will not resolve the underlying issues. “The Premier League is the most difficult league in the world,” Ronaldo explained. “All the teams are good, all the teams fight, all the teams run. All the players are strong. Football is different right now; there are no easy games anymore.”
He continued, “I said this one year and a half ago, and I will continue to say it: the problem is not the coaches. I always give this example: if you have a sick fish inside an aquarium and you take it out to fix the problem, if you put it back in the same aquarium, it will be sick again. The problem of Manchester United is not only the coach. It is much more than that.”
In a bold statement, Ronaldo also hinted at his aspirations for the future, suggesting that he could one day own a major football club. “If I will be the owner of the club, I will make things clear and adjust what I think is bad there,” he declared. “I am still very young, I have so many plans and dreams ahead, but mark my words, I will be the owner of a big club for sure.”
As the football world watches closely, Ronaldo’s words may serve as a beacon of hope for Manchester United supporters yearning for a return to the club’s former glory.
