Christine Sinclair Announces Retirement: A Legend Bids Farewell
In a poignant announcement that has sent ripples through the world of football, Christine Sinclair, the all-time leading goalscorer in international football, has revealed her intention to retire this November. The Canadian forward, who has etched her name in the annals of the sport, boasts an astonishing tally of 190 goals in 331 appearances for her national team, a record that stands unmatched across both the women’s and men’s game.
Having stepped away from international duty in December of last year, Sinclair continues to ply her trade with the Portland Thorns in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) in the United States. At 41 years of age, she has not only graced the pitch in six World Cups but also played a pivotal role in securing Olympic gold for Canada at the Tokyo Games in 2021.
Sinclair’s remarkable career is highlighted by her status as one of only two players to have scored in five World Cups, alongside Brazilian superstar Marta. Her club achievements are equally impressive, having clinched three NWSL titles with the Thorns, including the inaugural trophy in 2013, followed by victories in 2017 and 2022.
In a heartfelt statement shared on her Instagram, Sinclair expressed her gratitude, saying, “Portland, thank you will never be enough. Soccer has been my passion since I was four years old, and it has taken me on a journey I could never have imagined. As I finish out this last ride, I want to say what a privilege it has been to represent this unique, beautiful, and passionate city that I will always call home.”
The Portland Thorns echoed her sentiments in a post on X, stating, “You changed the game. You inspired generations. You did it all representing the Rose City. When you hang your boots at the end of the season, you’ll forever be The Greatest Of All Time.”
Notably, Sinclair holds the record for the most appearances for the Thorns and is the only player to have been with the club since its inception in 2013. As she prepares to hang up her boots, the footballing world will undoubtedly celebrate her extraordinary contributions to the sport and the legacy she leaves behind.
