Chelsea secured their spot in the knockout stages of the UEFA Women’s Champions League with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge. The atmosphere was electric as Guro Reiten of Chelsea celebrated her goal, captured beautifully by Alex Pantling/Getty Images.
Real Madrid, already out of contention in Group D, arrived in West London with nothing to lose. They displayed great determination and resilience, posing a threat to Emma Hayes’ side for large parts of the game. However, it was Chelsea who ultimately prevailed.
The breakthrough came in the second half when Hayley Raso of Real Madrid conceded a penalty after fouling Niamh Charles. Guro Reiten stepped up confidently and converted the spot-kick, sending the Chelsea faithful into raptures.
Real Madrid, refusing to go down without a fight, managed to equalize. Hannah Hampton, Chelsea’s goalkeeper, could only parry a fierce shot from Raso, allowing Athenea del Castillo to pounce on the rebound and find the back of the net.
The visitors’ joy was short-lived, though, as Erin Cuthbert’s whipped cross caused chaos in the Real Madrid defense. In a stroke of misfortune, goalkeeper Mylene Chavas inadvertently deflected the ball into her own net, restoring Chelsea’s lead.
This victory not only secured Chelsea’s place in the next round but also showcased their resilience and ability to overcome tough opposition. The team will undoubtedly be looking to build on this success as they continue their journey in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
