Chelsea has finalized the acquisition of Brazilian striker Joao Pedro from Brighton and Hove Albion.
The Brazil international, Pedro, has officially signed a contract with Chelsea that will keep him at the club until 2033, with an initial transfer fee reported to be £55 million.
Pedro, who has made a significant impact in the Premier League, scored 30 goals in 70 appearances during his two seasons with Brighton. He is now poised to make his Chelsea debut in the FIFA Club World Cup quarter-final against Palmeiras this Saturday.
“Everyone knows this is a big club with a great history,” Pedro remarked upon his arrival. “They had brilliant players in the past and have brilliant players now. So I am excited to join and you know when you are a Chelsea player you must think one thing – win.”
The signing of Pedro marks Chelsea’s second major attacking acquisition this summer, following the arrival of striker Liam Delap from Ipswich.
Pedro’s journey in English football began in 2020 when he signed for Watford from Fluminense. He later joined Brighton for a reported fee of £30 million in 2023, where he continued to showcase his goal-scoring prowess.
Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler expressed his thoughts on the transfer, stating, “This is a good move for all parties. It’s an excellent deal for the club, and a good return on a significant investment in an area of the pitch where we have a lot of competition and are already well served in terms of our attacking talent.”
Hurzeler also highlighted the benefits for Pedro, adding, “It’s an exciting move for Joao: it gives him the opportunity to play Champions League football this coming season, and he will of course be keen to cement his position in the Brazil team ahead of the World Cup next summer.”
He concluded with gratitude, saying, “Joao has given us some wonderful moments – during my time and before I came to the club – so on behalf of everyone I would like to thank him for his service over the past two seasons and wish him the best for the future.”
